Gerund is a Verb+ing form that is used as a noun. Because of its function as a noun, so the Gerund can function as: Subject, Object of the Verbs, and Object of Prepositions and also Complements, for example:
1. As a Subject of the Sentence, example:
· Jogging once a weak can make healthy
· Having good education can be a future capital
· Being sick causes him to stop his music tour
· Practicing a lot is a must for every student
· Being a nurse is her ambition
2. As Object of a Certain Verbs, for example:
· Admit (mengakui)
Krishna admitted keeping secret documents
· Appreciate (menghargai)
We all appreciate your coming to this event
· Can’t bear (tak suka)
I can’t bear waiting for you too long
· Carry on (terus)
We can carry on talking about this case after lunch
· Datest (benci sekali)
Miranda detests talking with a bad guy
· Escape (lepas/lolos)
The prisoners managed to escape being shot death
· Fancy (bayangkan)
I never fancy marrying Cyntia
· Give up (menyerah)
Finally, she gives up telling a lie
· Leave off (berhenti)
You must leave off making a trouble
· Put off (menunda)
Don’t put off your homework until tomorrow
3. As Object of Preposition, for example: at, in, on, off, against, after, before, for
· Ardiyan is good at designing houses
· Jason is interested in learning Indonesian cultures
· Farida is clever at making new patterns of fashion
4. As Predicate Complements, for example:
· Her hobby is swimming
· My favorite activity is watching western films
5. As Modifiers of a Noun, for example:
· The waiting room is full of persons
· The working condition is far from ideal
· The swimming pool is being renovated
6. Gerunds with their Subjects, for example:
· She was angry at Jame’s trying to lie her
· Dina’s playing truant was very embarrassing
· Maya’s singing is very good
7. Gerunds with “It……ing”, for example:
· It’s nice sitting here with you
· It is no good talking to him
· It is no use trying to explain
